Open any mainstream economics textbook and you find a world of clean geometric lines. Supply and demand curves intersect in tidy equilibria. The “invisible hand” adjusts prices to steer resources toward their most valued uses. In their most stylized form, human beings appear as rational actors with unlimited wants, and the environment appears as a giant external warehouse of raw materials and a near-bottomless sink for waste.
