Re-imagining my Advocacy - From RBEs to Post-scarcity/Community Ecology

I don’t fully agree with this video. Our current economy is not directly based on resources. We measure economic growth not in resource efficiency, but in GDP growth, which is actually the opposite. We also don’t take into account the general health of society into the equation. So we don’t have an RBE nowadays.

Post-scarcity is a great way to promote this train of thought, also because the academic community uses that term. However, post-scarcity is an umbrella term. There are many models that fall under such an definition. Not all of them are directly related to what an RBE entails. For example the doughnut economy is a post-scarcity model. But it by far is not that detailed to improve resource efficiency, it also doesn’t advocate the socioeconomic change an RBE aims for. Then there is the World Economic Forum’s interpretation of a post-scarcity model, which is basically about moving taxes here and there and create some laws, but retain the growth model. By being unspecific, you indirectly advocate these non-efficient post-scarcity models as well.

So my suggestion would be to advocate and explain a post-scarcity economic model, and then give an RBE as a specific model.

There are by the way always people that mess up a community, this even happens in the scientific community where people have PhD’s. Just ignore those people and focus on the people that do get the message.

And while we’re picky about definitions, I live in The Netherlands, I have no idea what scarcity in reality means. “Aren’t we in a post-scarcity economy already?”
